Dr Lesley Carew is a registered Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist practising at the Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital in Cape Town with a satellite sessional room at the Akeso Milnerton.
Dr Carew completed her MBBCh degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1989. After a few years gaining experience in general medicine, she did her post-graduate studies in psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Cape Town. She has practised as a Child and Adolescent psychiatrist since 2000.
The practice covers the assessment and management of a broad range of paediatric onset psychiatric disorders, including mood and anxiety disorders, ADHD and learning disorders, Autism and behavioural disorders. Dr Carew has an interest in psychological conditions co-occurring with medical disorders and completed a Master’s thesis on the experience of adolescents living with Cystic fibrosis. She has provided services to the Burns Unit, Paediatric ICU and Renal Units at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town.
Dr Carew has served as a consultant at the Educational Psychology Unit at the University of Stellenbosch, a board member of the Alternative Care Panel of the Child Welfare Society, as a consultant to the SA Children’s Home in Tamboerskloof, and been involved in the training and supervision of trainees at the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, UCT. She is committed to improving the mental health of children in the community through education and gives talks to professionals and parents at schools about a variety of topics.
